It was already obvious that software was going to be incredibly important, and there were already major success stories. However, people were still many missing fundamental concepts (a clear understanding of what procedures and variables were, for example), and the distance from theory to practice could be as short as implementing Lisp by programming up the code in a theorem. This is an INCREDIBLY exciting time to be working on languages and verification.
