For some variant of the Vehicle Routing Problem my algorithm that is based on combinatorial optimization performs a lot better than the algorithms based on machine learning of my competitors. So I ask myself whether some of you know of another practically relevant optimization problem where combinatorial optimization beats machine learning?

$\begingroup$ Combinatorial optimization is a main area studied in Operations Research. Maybe check out or.stackexchange.com/tags for a quick ad-hoc look at techniques used by people in that field. Also try or.stackexchange.com/search?q=machine+learning to find some discussions related to machine learning. $\endgroup$– Neal YoungMar 1 at 18:53
