What do you when you cannot make progress on the problem you arehave been working oneon?

I am a 2nd year graduate student in theory. I have been working on a problem for the last year (in graph theory/algorithms). Until yesterday I thought I am doing well (I was extending a theorem from a paper). Today I realized that I have made a simple mistake. I realized that it will be much harder than I thought to do what I intended to do. I feel disappointed so much I am thinking to leave researchabout leaving grad school.

Is this a common situation that a researchers notices that her idea is not going to work after considerable amount of work? What

What do you do when you realized that thean approach you had in mind is not going to work and the problem seems too difficult to solve? What

What advice would you give to a studentstudent in my situation?

How to get new ideas in TCS What do you when you cannot make progress on the problem you are working one?

This is not a research question, please excuse me for this. II am a 2nd year graduate student in theory from a good institute in India. I amhave been working on graph theory and algorithms froma problem for the last one year with out any results(in graph theory/algorithms). Until Until yesterday I thought I am doing well in(I was extending a proof of a theorem from one of thea paper I read). But today while I am discussing with one of my friend IToday I realized that I have made a simple mistake in the proof. Now I I realized that its hard to complete the proof and am veryit will be much disappointedharder than I thought to do what I intended to do. Now I feel disappointed so much I am thinking to leave my graduate school because I feel its not for meresearch.

Can some one tell me howIs this a common situation? What do you over comedo when you realized that the difficulties whichapproach you face while proving resultshad in TCS.mind is not going to work and the problem seems too difficult to solve? What advice would you give to a student in my situation?
